It makes no difference how many times youve done it, you never got used to entering a pitch black stairwell. Never knowing what youd find, you had to make as little noise as possible. After getting off the elevator on the 14th floor, I entered the stairwell leading to the roof, making sure that I didnt let the metal door slam behind me. It takes about a minute for your eyes to adjust to the darkness. I used that minute to listen for the sound of someones heavy breathing. I knew that I was one hell of a target on the way up the narrow staircase, but I had no choice. I had to keep going. On this particular night, I already knew that there was at least one bad guy up on the roof. Most of the time thats not the case-youre the one at a disadvantage, climbing those cement stairs, one step at a time. With your gun in one hand and your nightstick in the other, you wondered if the next step that you took would be your last! Follow the exploits of a once proud Detective. recently demoted, when he arrests a criminal on a rooftop, who had committed one of the most abominable crimes imaginable.
