Samenvatting:

The aim of this work is to guide the reader along the road which connects physics of polymer molecules to the engineering application. Topics such as intermolecular co-operativity, relaxation mode coupling, and free energy of stress invariants are covered in a way understandable to the nonexpert.

The aim of this work is to guide the reader along the road which connects physics of polymer molecules to the engineering application. Ideas of intermolecular co-operativity, irreversible thermodynamics, relaxation mode coupling, free energy of stress invariants, viscoplasticity and other difficult concepts are incorporated throughout the volume in the manner that a nonexpert in these theories can grasp and utilize them in practice. It covers the glassy polymers, crystalline state, polymer melt and polymer solutions. A computer program in GWBASIC is included which predicts engineering properties of polymer solids from the stress-strain data. This work should be of interest not only to polymer engineers, but to academic readers and students as it covers the fundamentals of relaxation, morphology, rheology, thermodynamics, fracture, solution, glass transition and physical ageing.
