Kerkyra (Corfu), the mythical island of the Phaeacians, was the last 'port of call' of Odysseus before he returned to Ithaca. Scattered traces of the ancient heritage of Kerkyra are preserved today. However, what really makes the island stand apart is its urban architecture, which constitutes an important heritage not only for modern Greece, but also for Europe. For this reason, the city of Corfu has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Its architectural wealth includes fortresses, fortifications, palaces, churches, mansions, public buildings, medieval neighbourhoods and public places dating from various periods.
