One may view the idea of the nation as a fundamental "assumption" which defines the manner in which modern man perceives, and experiences, social reality. Thus, just as persons in earlier historical periods tended to possess an absolute faith in the reality of God, so, we may suggest, do persons in contemporary cultures tend to possess an absolute faith in the reality of the nation.
