Jason Black dreams of a different life, a life of excitement and adventure like he read about in an old science fiction novel. Jason knows that travel to Mars is possible and thinks that getting to Mars would be like a trip to the Grand Canyon. His father, lost in his own dreams of his dead wife, knows that even the trip to Mars is difficult, if not impossible for ordinary people. He opposes the idea of such a radical change in their humdrum lives. He also faces the conflict of having had the same dream when he was Jasons age; a dream that was unobtainable then.
