Thank You For Your Suffering

From indie rockstar and internationally bestselling author of Crying in H Mart Michelle Zauner – aka Japanese Breakfast – comes an intimate, funny and moving new memoir about her year in South Korea.

Sorting through a box of documents after her mother’s death, Michelle Zauner comes across an old diary, written in Korean. She dreams of being able to understand these journals, of speaking her mother’s native tongue and reconnecting with her family in Seoul.

Thank You For Your Suffering recounts her deeply personal journey through the heart of South Korea, from the quirky apartment she rents with her husband and bandmate Peter, to the punishing language school that leaves her in tears. Fighting stubbornly to become fluent in Korean and acclimatise to this vibrant, unfamiliar city, Michelle also finds profound new pleasures: slowly making Korean friends, exploring Seoul’s alternative underground, spending precious time with her mother’s beloved sister, writing songs in a new language.

In the fiercely emotional continuation of the mother-daughter story that captivated the world, Michelle Zauner shares with mesmerising honesty the failures and triumphs of immersing herself in a new culture, mastering a new tongue, and discovering a new kind of wonder.
