The Analysis of Beauty (Annotated)

The Analysis of Beauty (1753) is William Hogarth's ambitious treatise on visual aesthetics, written to explain the principles underlying grace, variety, and pictorial pleasure. Rejecting rigid classical formulas and connoisseurial mystification, Hogarth argues for the "serpentine line," or line of beauty, as the key to movement, vitality, and elegance in art and nature. Its style is argumentative, practical, and often combative, combining Enlightenment empiricism with an artist's workshop intelligence and illustrated by plates that turn theory into visual demonstration. Hogarth, best known as a painter and engraver of modern moral subjects such as A Harlot's Progress and Marriage A-la-Mode, wrote from within the lively artistic and commercial culture of eighteenth-century London. As a self-made artist suspicious of aristocratic taste and imported academic authority, he sought to defend a native, observational, and democratic theory of art. His experience in satire, narrative composition, and print culture shaped the book's insistence that beauty is intelligible, embodied, and socially visible. This book is recommended for readers interested in aesthetics, art history, and the intellectual life of the Enlightenment. It remains essential for understanding how an artist theorized beauty not as abstraction, but as dynamic form, perception, and lived experience.
