The Work of Philosophy

A powerful argument that a life of the mind is essential to our humanity.

A powerful argument that a life of the mind is essential to our humanity.

For the ancient philosophers, a life worth living was a life spent in contemplation of higher ideas that challenged the intellect and nourished the spirit. Our modern world, in contrast, rewards pointless busyness with endless consumption and entertainment. What is lost when we abandon the contemplative life? Everything, argues Jared Henderson.

Part practical guide, part philosophical treatise, The Work of Philosophy offers a path to the life of the mind in our frantic 21st century. But you need not join a monastery or go off into the desert to nurture a rich interior life: anyone can do it with just two hours a day. Henderson’s program draws on examples from Aristotle, Montaigne, Hannah Arendt, Byung-chul Han, C.S. Lewis and more to teach readers to follow a line of inquiry, to read deeply and write with intention, and to create a community that will support you in your intellectual endeavors.

Contemplation is necessary for the cultivation of wonder, curiosity and joy. Like many great thinkers before you, you can find deep respite and fulfillment in the life of the mind. With a little discipline and the guidance in this book, the philosophical life is open to everyone.
