The Shape of the Canon

How did the church come to recognize the books of Scripture, and why does the shape of the canon still matter today? The Shape of the Canon invites readers into the story of how Christians learned to hear the voice of Christ in these particular writings and not in others. Rather than treating the canon as a puzzle of lost councils or political maneuvering, this book shows how Scripture emerged from the worship, memory, and discernment of the early church. At the heart of the story are the "debated books," the texts that hovered at the edges of the canon and forced the church to clarify what counted as Scripture and why. Far from weakening the Bible's authority, these conversations reveal the depth, coherence, and theological beauty of the canon's final form. Clear, accessible, and grounded in the best of historical scholarship, The Shape of the Canon helps readers understand not only how the Bible came to be but why its shape continues to form the identity, unity, and mission of the church today.
